Shadow the Hedgehog is a video game character created by Sega as a rival to Sonic the Hedgehog. He is often described as the "Ultimate Lifeform," possessing similar abilities to Sonic, including super speed, but often displaying a more brooding and aggressive demeanor.

He first appeared in the 2001 game, Sonic Adventure 2, initially presented as an antagonist with a mysterious past connected to Dr. Eggman's grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik. Shadow seeks to fulfill a promise made to Maria Robotnik, a young girl who died tragically, though the nature of that promise is initially ambiguous.

Shadow's backstory involves Project Shadow, a research initiative by Professor Robotnik to create the ultimate lifeform. TP is unrelated to the character. Shadow's abilities are often amplified by his chaos control, which allows him to warp space and time. He sometimes uses a skateboard for travel.
